Windows 11 Home vs Pro vs Enterprise: Which Edition Do You Need?

Aggiornato Aug 2026 7 min di lettura

Windows 11 Home, Pro, and Enterprise install from the exact same files and look identical on the desktop. What separates them is a set of features gated behind the edition key — mostly aimed at business, security, and IT management use cases rather than everyday computing.

What Home Includes

Windows 11 Home covers everything most people actually use day to day: full app compatibility, Windows Hello, Microsoft Defender, Snap Layouts, and the Microsoft Store. For a personal or family PC used for browsing, streaming, office work, and gaming, Home is genuinely enough.

What Pro Adds

Pro adds BitLocker full-disk encryption, Remote Desktop (as a host, letting you connect into this PC from elsewhere), Hyper-V for running virtual machines, Group Policy Editor for advanced system configuration, and the ability to join Azure AD / domain networks.

If you work remotely and need to access your desktop from another location, run virtual machines for testing, or your employer requires domain-joined devices, Pro is the edition you actually need — Home simply can't do these things at all, not even with a workaround.

What Enterprise Adds on Top of Pro

Enterprise is licensed through volume agreements for organizations, not sold as an individual retail key. It layers on advanced deployment tools, extended update management (letting IT departments control rollout timing across hundreds of machines), and additional security features like Credential Guard and Windows Defender Application Control.

For an individual or small business, Enterprise features are almost entirely irrelevant — they solve problems specific to managing large fleets of computers, not single-PC ownership.

Price vs Feature Trade-Off

Pro typically costs somewhat more than Home for the same underlying OS. Whether that's worth it comes down to a single question: do you specifically need BitLocker, Hyper-V, Remote Desktop hosting, or domain join? If yes to any of those, Pro pays for itself immediately. If no, Home covers everything you'll actually touch.

Il Nostro Verdetto

Buy Home if you're setting up a personal, family, or gaming PC with no need for remote access, encryption, or virtual machines.

Buy Pro if you work remotely and need Remote Desktop, run VMs for development or testing, need BitLocker for sensitive data, or your workplace requires a domain-joined machine.

Skip Enterprise entirely unless you're an IT department managing dozens or hundreds of machines under a volume license — it's not something an individual buys.

Yes — it's a simple key-based edition upgrade, no reinstall required. See our guide on upgrading Windows 10 Home to Pro for the exact steps (the same process applies on Windows 11).
