Autodesk products use a two-part licensing system — a serial number and a product key together — that's slightly different from the single-key activation most people are used to with Windows or Office, so it's worth understanding before you sit down to install.
Serial Number vs Product Key
The serial number identifies your specific license and account entitlement. The product key identifies which Autodesk application it belongs to (AutoCAD, AutoCAD LT, and other products each have their own distinct product key even under the same account). Both are required together during activation.
Activation Process
During installation, Autodesk's installer prompts for both the serial number and product key, then verifies them against Autodesk's account servers online. Once verified, the software activates and links to your Autodesk Account for future management.
Single-User vs Network Licenses
Single-user licenses tie activation to your specific Autodesk Account, letting you sign in on a limited number of devices. Network licenses use a license server on a local network, checking out available seats to any authorized machine on that network — a model built for teams and offices, not individual buyers.
Common Activation Problems
- Mismatched serial/key pair — double check both belong to the same product and license
- No internet connection during activation — Autodesk requires online verification
- Trying to activate a product-specific key against the wrong application (e.g. an AutoCAD LT key inside full AutoCAD)
